Following completion of a Bachelor of Business Studies degree majoring in Property Management and Valuation at Massey University, Karen commenced work at Valuation New Zealand, West Auckland in 1990 where she remained until obtaining her registration in 1993.
Karen then joined the West Auckland based practice of Bristow Barbour and Walker Ltd, (now Darroch Valuations) where she undertook a wide range of residential valuation work rising to the position of Manager of the residential team. As Team Leader Karen was responsible for the mentoring of staff, achievement of budgeted targets, marketing and management of the team, and reported to the Principal Director. Karen undertook many of the more challenging assignments including the assessment of compensation for key clients such as Waitakere City Council and market and mortgage valuations throughout the coastal areas of Titirangi, Laingholm and Piha.
In 1996 Karen received the New Zealand Institute of Valuers Young Valuer of the Year Award.
During her 16 years with BBW/Darroch, Karen has valued a wide range of both residential and commercial property. She has worked in the Henderson, New Lynn, Newmarket and City offices of the company, her service being interrupted for a short time when she took maternity leave. In 2002 Karen elected to specialise in commercial and industrial valuations throughout Auckland’s Western suburbs. She has developed a strong network with West Auckland real estate agents and local property and business owners which has been fostered over many years.
In 2009 Karen joined Sheldons and continues to specialise in the Waitakere and Avondale areas, and now also covers the Rodney district. Work type includes market and mortgage valuations, rental reviews, and insurance and compensation assessments.
Karen has served on the Auckland Branch Committee for several years and is a past Deputy Chair of the Auckland Branch. Karen is an Associate of the New Zealand Institute of Valuers and a Senior member of the Property Institute of New Zealand.
